Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups cake flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Zest of an orange, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • Cinnamon for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, sea salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl using an electric mixer, beat together the softened butter and dark brown sugar until creamy—about two minutes.
  4. Add in the eggs one at a time along with vanilla and orange extracts until well blended.
  5. Beat in the sour cream and one tablespoon of orange zest until fully combined.
  6. Gradually mix in half of the dry mixture followed by the milk, then add the remaining dry ingredients until just combined.
  7. Spoon or pour the batter into your lined cupcake tins—fill each liner about two-thirds full.
  8. Bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow them to cool completely before frosting.
  9. In another large bowl, beat room temperature butter until creamy. Add cream cheese until smooth.
  10. Gradually mix in vanilla and orange extracts along with salt before slowly incorporating confectioner’s sugar until you reach desired consistency.
  11. Spread or pipe frosting onto each cooled cupcake and sprinkle with ground cinnamon before serving.
